Examples of How MERS™ Is Being Used

Teach BLS, CPR and AED assessment and treatment skills
- In classroom to demonstrate patient trauma and medical assessment and management skills:
Instructor first plays with PowerPoint introduction to MERS™, then demonstrates one case to the class. The Instructor then has students draw "playing cards" to select the order for students to play scenarios in front of their peers. This has been very successful in generating class participation as well as "real-life" peer pressure to perform.
- As a student resource/study tool
in their library to give students extra practice with critical thinking, patient assessment, making treatment and transport decisions and documentation.
- As a capstone project:
A student must successfully complete a case before they can graduate from the program.
- As a class project or homework assignment:
Students must successfully complete case either individually or as a group.
- As a diagnostic tool:
Students must do a specified case and show a printed evaluation to their instructor to demonstrate proficiency.
- As a tool for visual or hands-on learners:
Students with different learning styles, or students having trouble in the course benefit from visual and/or hands-on practice.
- As a station in the skills portion of the course:
While instructors are busy working with one group of students in a skills station, another practices their critical assessment and treatment skills with a hands-on scenario.
- As an in-class case study:
Instructors are projecting a case in class and having the students complete a case as a group.
- As a way to "show" students how to do patient assessment:
Instructors are projecting a case in class to walk students through the critical patient assessment steps.
- Remedial work and/or extra credit

|
Maintain readiness for certified practitioners
- In team scenario competitions:
Firefighters and EMS practitioners use MERS™ in competitions to achieve best time and score for patient assessment, treatment, transport and run-sheet documentation.
- As a refresher tool
for providers who need to brush up on their critical thinking with scenario based simulations before they re-certify.
- To sharpen skills
during downtimes and while waiting for calls.
